Getting to Club Med Kiroro Grand

To reach Club Med Kiroro Grand, you’ll need to fly to New Chitose Airport. Airlines flying to Chitose include AirAsia, Thai Airways, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Scoot, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Starlux, and EVA Air. Do note that some airlines may require an overnight stay due to their flight schedules.

Our preferred airlines are All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines due to their generous baggage allowance of 2 pieces, weighing 23kg each in Economy Class or 32kg per piece in Business Class. Additionally, the onboard WiFi allows us to work while flying. We typically combine our trip to Hokkaido with a stopover in Tokyo, making this one of the best options for us. Keep an eye out for All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines’ free domestic flight offers.

Recovery Time At Chitose

During our last visit to Club Med Kiroro Peak in March 2023, we arrived and headed straight to the resort on the same day. Exhausted from the journey, we could barely keep our eyes open by evening.

However, for our trip to Club Med Kiroro Grand in April 2024, we planned differently. Opting for a more relaxed approach, we decided to spend a night at the Air Terminal Hotel located at the domestic terminal of New Chitose Airport before continuing our journey to Club Med Kiroro Grand the next day. This allowed us to shake off the fatigue of travel and wake up rejuvenated for the adventures ahead.

The Air Terminal Hotel offers decent-sized rooms with comfortable beds. We stayed in a triple room, which could accommodate 5 large check-in bags and 2 medium-sized ones. However, the bathroom’s ceiling is a bit low, which might feel tight for taller individuals.

Additionally, guests staying at the Air Terminal Hotel can enjoy complimentary access to the New Chitose Airport Onsen. To access it, you’ll need to obtain a voucher from the hotel reception and walk to the onsen located on the 4th floor of the building. The onsen is spacious and segregated by gender, featuring two indoor hot pools, one cold pool, and an outdoor pool (although, during our visit, the outdoor pool was closed).

There’s also a relaxation room available for both genders and one exclusively for ladies. Furthermore, we discovered the onsen offers 11 room accommodations that can be booked, starting from ¥9000 per person based on double occupancy but reservations is only accepted from 3 months in advance.

Arriving at Club Med Kiroro Grand

One drawback of staying at the Air Terminal Hotel is the rather basic breakfast offered. However, a bonus is that you can check out and leave your luggage at the reception, then head over to the other part of Chitose Airport, which is structured like a shopping mall, with food courts, restaurants, shops, museums, and more.

One of the advantages of staying at the Air Terminal Hotel is that the Club Med transfer desk is conveniently located nearby. Simply take the hotel lift down to the second floor, turn right, and the transfer desk is just a few steps away.

Club Med Desk at Chitose Airport

Before embarking on our journey to Club Med Kiroro Grand, we made sure to satisfy our ramen cravings at the third-level food court of New Chitose Airport. Additionally, we couldn’t resist indulging in some delectable matcha soft serve located on the second level. Trust us, it’s a treat worth experiencing.

For convenience, we opted for the Club Med transfer from Chitose Airport. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes. The Club Med transfer is a shared scheduled service charged at a per-person rate. Alternatively, for larger groups or those desiring privacy, we can assist in arranging private transfers at a per-vehicle charge.

For travellers looking to save on expenses, another option is to take the JR Hokkaido train to Otaru, followed by a short shuttle bus or taxi ride to Club Med Kiroro Grand. This provides a more budget-friendly alternative while still ensuring a smooth journey to the resort.

Club Med Kiroro Grand Location

Club Med Kiroro Grand is situated in the Kiroro ski area, surrounded by sweeping views of majestic snow-capped mountains and enchanting landscapes, setting the stage for an unforgettable escape. There are three accommodation properties in the area: Club Med Kiroro Peak, Yu Kiroro, and Club Med Kiroro Grand. Upon arrival at Kiroro, you will first encounter Club Med Kiroro Grand, with Yu Kiroro, a service apartment complex, located next to it.

Further up the road, you will find the Kiroro Mountain Center and Club Med Kiroro Peak, along with access to chairlifts and gondolas leading to various ski slopes. From Club Med Kiroro Grand, you can take the 4-minute Gateway Gondola to the ski slopes or the shuttle bus that runs between the Kiroro Mountain Center and Club Med Kiroro Grand.

Club Med Kiroro Grand Review - Resort Building

Club Med Kiroro Grand Review on the resort

Club Med Kiroro Grand opened its doors in December 2023, marking a new chapter for the resort. However, its physical footprint has a rich history.

The building formerly housed The Tribute Portfolio, with its annex serving as the Kiroro Town Center, boasting facilities such as a pool, fitness center, onsen, a small cafe, restaurants, mart, and nature center. When the property was sold by Thai company Property Perfect to Fohsun Group, the major shareholder in Club Med, it underwent extensive renovations and transformation.

Upon its reopening as Club Med Kiroro Grand, the hotel and town center now comprise the entirety of Club Med Kiroro Grand, blending modern amenities with echoes of its past. Despite the renovations, traces of the original structure and artwork can still be glimpsed, particularly in the Kiroro Town Center section. This fusion of old and new adds a unique charm to the resort, offering guests a glimpse into its storied past while embracing the comforts of contemporary luxury.

Club Med Kiroro Grand Review on the rooms

Club Med Kiroro Grand offers a diverse range of accommodation options, catering to various preferences and needs. From cozy superior rooms to expansive suites, every space is meticulously crafted to ensure comfort and relaxation for guests. All the rooms are located in the main building, spanning from levels 3 to 14, offering different perspectives of the stunning surroundings.

While the ambiance is generally serene, it’s worth noting that rooms situated on levels 3 to 7 might experience occasional noise disturbances from guests indulging in piano sessions within the resort.

It’s essential to mention that there are no interconnecting rooms available at Club Med Kiroro Grand, and certain room types, such as the Family Deluxe Tatami rooms, are not situated on the same floor. If you book 2 units of this room type, they will be located on different floors.

For families, there are options like the junior family superior room and family superior room, both equipped with one or two sofa beds ideal for children and teenagers. There is also the Master Family Suite that comes with three sofa beds, accommodating up to 5 persons.

Regardless of room type, all accommodations boast elegant furnishings and modern amenities. From plush bedding to well-appointed en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary Wi-Fi, guests can expect nothing less than utmost comfort and convenience during their stay. Moreover, each room offers picturesque views of the surrounding landscape, adding to the overall enchanting experience at Club Med Kiroro Grand.

Checking-in to our rooms at Club Med Kiroro Grand

Our stay at Club Med Kiroro Grand spanned from 08 to 14 April 2024. During the initial four nights, we stayed in the Junior Family Superior Room (Rooms 728 and 729). The room boasted tasteful decor and featured a versatile Hollywood bed that could be adjusted to either a King-sized configuration or two twin beds, complemented by a sofa bed suitable for a child or adolescent. Notably, the sofa bed could comfortably accommodate taller individuals, measuring a generous 1.9 meters in length. The bedding provided by Club Med Kiroro Grand was exceptional—soft and inviting, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.

From our room, we enjoyed picturesque views of the beginner ski area at Club Med Kiroro Grand and Yu Kiroro. The bathroom amenities included dual sinks—one located outside and another within the bathroom—and the flooring was lined with vinyl, offering enhanced comfort when walking on cold mornings. However, it’s worth noting that the shower and bathtub were combined, necessitating guests to step into the bathtub for showering.

The toilet facilities were equipped with a heated seat and bidet, a welcomed luxury. Additionally, robes were thoughtfully provided beneath the television for guests interested in utilizing the onsen.

For the subsequent three nights, we were accommodated in the Superior Room (Rooms 801 and 802), which featured a similar Hollywood bed convertible to a King-sized or twin-bed arrangement. This room offered breathtaking mountain views both from the bed and the bathtub.

The Superior Room’s bathroom layout differed from that of the Junior Family Superior Room. Notably, the bathtub and shower were separate, with the shower enclosed in its own space. However, the bathroom floor tended to be chilly in the mornings, as it was tiled without heating, unlike the vinyl flooring in the Junior Family Superior Room. Furthermore, the shower area lacked space for any toiletries, necessitating us to place them on the floor.

One drawback of the Superior Room was the numerous angles on the ceiling, posing a potential hazard for taller individuals navigating the bed area.

Overall, our experience at Club Med Kiroro Grand was pleasant, with both room options offering unique amenities and stunning views, albeit with some minor differences in layout and comfort features.

Ski Pass

Each guest at Club Med Kiroro Grand is provided with a ski pass for the use of the gondola and chairlifts. While the ski pass is primarily intended for ascending the mountain and skiing down the slopes, non-skiers can utilise the gondola to appreciate the breathtaking mountain views.

There are two gondolas available for non-skiers. The first is the gateway gondola, which transports you from Club Med Kiroro Grand to the main ski area in Kiroro. The second is the Kiroro Gondola, which takes you to Asari Peak at an elevation of 1,180 meters. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes, covering a distance of 3.3 kilometers through a forest, offering panoramic views of Ishikari Bay, the Shakotan Peninsula, and the Niseko mountains at the summit.

Non-skiers should refrain from using the chairlifts as they are designated for one-way travel only, specifically for ascending the mountain before skiing or snowboarding down. There is no option to descend via chairlifts.

Terrain and Slopes

Club Med Kiroro Grand is a paradise for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts of all levels. From gentle slopes for beginners to challenging runs for experts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Right at the ski departure area is a specially designed zone for beginners to learn, complete with a magic carpet to assist in climbing the slope.

Once you’re feeling confident, you can hop on the gondola from Club Med Kiroro Grand to the main Kiroro ski area. From there, you can ski back down on an easy family slope. Alternatively, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can take the Family chairlift up and try out the beginner slope.

The best time for powder snow is from mid-December until mid-March. That’s when the snow is at its best. April, on the other hand, is more suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers due to lower prices and lesser crowds. However, some advanced trails may not be accessible during this time, making it less ideal for experienced skiers.

Is there still snow in Club Med Kiroro in April?

Many clients often inquire about the snow conditions in April. The Kiroro area boasts one of the highest snowfalls in Japan, averaging 21 meters per season, and its ski season typically extends from December through April. While the powder snow may begin to diminish due to rising temperatures, there remains an ample amount of snow on the slopes for winter sports.

Skiing and Snowboarding Opportunities in April

Despite the transition to spring, guests visiting Club Med Kiroro in April can still relish excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities, including milder weather, extended daylight hours, and fewer crowds compared to the peak winter months. Skiers and snowboarders can delight in the soft, sun-kissed snow while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

However, it’s important to note that not all chairlifts are operational during the low season in April. During our stay at Club Med Kiroro from 08 to 14 April 2024, only 7 out of 10 lifts were in operation. Additionally, the Kiroro Gondola was operational only on weekends.

Other Facilities and Activities at Club Med Kiroro Grand

Indulge in the ultimate relaxation experience at Club Med Kiroro Grand Wellness Centre after a day filled with thrilling adventures. The wellness centre is located in the annex building. At the wellness centre, you’ll find a fitness centre, table tennis, gym, swimming pool, hot springs, and spa facilities. Small key lockers are available at the entrance of the swimming pool and hot springs. Guests are required to remove their footwear when entering this area.

Swimming Pool and Sauna

The swimming pool and sauna are located on the ground floor of the Club Med Kiroro Grand Wellness area. The water in the swimming pool is temperature-controlled, but still a little cold. Additionally, there is a jacuzzi in the corner of the swimming pool. Key lockers are available to keep your belongings, along with a changing area. Remember to bring your swimwear to use the swimming pool.

Hot Springs (Onsen)

The onsen at Club Med Kiroro Grand is situated on the first floor of the wellness center. It is segregated by gender. Guests are required to fully disrobe before entering the onsen. The storage provided in the onsen consists of baskets; therefore, it is advisable to store valuables in the key lockers located at the entrance of the wellness area.

The onsen features three indoor tubs: a hot tub, a hotter tub with jacuzzi, and a cold tub. Additionally, there are two outdoor tubs. The larger outdoor tub is filled with 100% natural spring water, which may appear somewhat murky. The smaller outdoor tub offers a perfect setting for individuals and boasts a mountain view. Furthermore, there is a sauna within the onsen facilities.

For guests with tattoos, a gentle reminder: while indulging in the therapeutic waters of the hot springs, please ensure that tattoos are respectfully covered with a bandage. This small consideration ensures a harmonious atmosphere for all guests to relax and enjoy their rejuvenating retreat.

Club Med Kiroro Grand Review on the Restaurants and Bar

Malaysians have a deep love for eating, and you will be delighted by the dining options at Club Med Kiroro Grand, which boasts four restaurants and one bar. The main dining venue, Yoichi Restaurant, offers an international buffet, while the main bar, Yotei, is conveniently located next to Yoichi.

Additionally, the resort features three specialty restaurants that are open exclusively for dinner. Ogon Restaurant, which serves Japanese Hot Pot, is included in the Club Med package. Kaen Restaurant, offering Yakiniku, and Ebisu Restaurant, specializing in Sushi, are available at an extra cost.

During our stay, we had the pleasure of dining at two of these specialty restaurants.

Yoichi Restaurant

The vibrant Yoichi restaurant at Club Med Kiroro Grand is the main restaurant, catering to guests’ dining needs throughout the day. From early morning hours to late at night, Yoichi is a hub of culinary delights, welcoming guests for breakfast, lunch, late lunch, and dinner. When hunger strikes outside regular dining hours, a dedicated snack section springs to life, offering a tempting array of treats including sandwiches, samosas, squid rings, and more.

The buffet at Yoichi offers a rich array of culinary delights, ensuring there’s something to tantalize every palate. Guests can explore a wide range of cuisines, from Western and Italian dishes to authentic Japanese fare. Asian flavors shine with Chinese and Thai specialties adding a spicy twist to the dining experience. A dedicated bread corner satisfies carb cravings, while crisp salads and fresh fruits provide a refreshing contrast. Dessert aficionados will delight in the heavenly assortment of sweet treats awaiting discovery, with the melon mochi being a standout recommendation. To culminate the meal with a cool and creamy touch, soft-serve lavender or melon ice cream beckons to be savored.

With such an extensive array of dining options, Club Med Kiroro Grand ensures that every guest’s gastronomic desires are not just met, but exceeded. Whether seeking familiar comforts or eager to explore new flavors, Yoichi promises an unforgettable dining journey for all who pass through its doors.

Yotei Bar

Yotei is the main bar in Club Med Kiroro Grand. It offers an extensive array of beverages, ranging from coffee, tea, soft drinks, and juices to milkshakes, cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine, and spirits.

Be sure to indulge in their signature concoctions, such as the Kigoiwa no Taki or Nisa Bell cocktails. Additionally, their signature mocktails, Oasis and Fruit Park Niki, are worth a try. Should you desire an alcoholic twist to their mocktail offerings, simply notify the bar team.

Despite the diverse drink selection, the bar is only a u-shape that feels a bit small for a resort of this scale.

Adjacent to the main bar, there is a self-service drinks station offers guests the convenience of helping themselves to beverages like Sapporo Beer, soft drinks, tea, and coffee. This setup effectively reduces wait times at the bar, enhancing overall guest experience.

Ogon Restaurant

The Ogon is a hotpot specialty restaurant that offers complimentary dining, but reservations are required to secure a table. With its stunning interior, we were fortunate to be seated upstairs. Our meal commenced with a delightful array of starters, including ikura don, dumplings, and steamed tofu.

The highlight of the meal was the hotpot, a clear dashi-based soup. The complimentary basket contained a selection of Hokkaido meat, seafood, fresh vegetables, and tofu. While the vegetables could be added at no extra cost, there was a charge for the meat.

SelectionPrice

Wagyu Beef Slices for 2 persons¥28,800 (MYR831)

We requested additional tofu, but unfortunately, it was unavailable as the restaurant had run out. This left us feeling slightly disappointed, especially considering that the portions provided were not sufficient, and the additional charges for certain items felt steep.

In summary, while the restaurant’s ambiance was delightful and the complimentary aspects were appreciated, the overall dining experience was marred by the lack of availability of requested items and the high cost of add-ons.

We previously dined at Kaen Restaurant during our Club Med Kiroro Peak visit in March 2023 when it was complimentary, and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. However, returning in April 2024, Kaen Restaurant is now a paid establishment.

Our meal began with a selection of starters including a mixed salad, egg-drop seaweed soup, and kimchi. The menu now offers three choices of baskets, each with its own assortment of meats and seafood.

100g Oyster¥3500 (MYR101)

In comparison to Haku Yakiniku Restaurant in Club Med Tomamu, we found Kean Restaurant to be exceptionally overpriced. At Haku Yakiniku, a complimentary basket is provided, and the additional Premium Beef Basket costs only ¥15,800 (MYR456), while the Premium Ocean Basket costs ¥16,800 (MYR485).

Overall, while we enjoyed our meal at Kean Restaurant, but we were disappointed by the significant difference in pricing compared to other dining options within the Club Med resorts.

Temperatures in Hokkaido can vary greatly. When we arrived in Chitose on 07 April 2024, the temperature ranged from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. We were a little concerned about whether there would be any snow left at Kiroro since there was very little remaining in Chitose.

On 08 April 2024, when we arrived at Club Med Kiroro Grand, we were greeted with a temperature of 1 degree Celsius, and the slopes were still blanketed in snow. This excited us and got us ready for our spring ski adventure.

Such temperature fluctuations can make you more susceptible to illness, so it’s wise to pack clothing that you can layer. April temperatures are generally milder, so layering allows you to adjust to your needs.

The temperature within the resort is comfortable; you can stroll around the resort facilities with just a sweater. However, if you plan to venture outdoors, you’ll need a thicker jacket as it can be cold and windy, even in April.

It is highly recommended to bring essential medications with you, as finding suitable alternatives in Japan can be quite challenging. During my stay at Club Med Kiroro Grand, I unfortunately fell ill, beginning with a fever, followed by a blocked nose, and eventually developing a cough. Although my Club Med GO friends were incredibly supportive and provided some basic medications, I found that the options they offered were not suitable for me.

Please note that Club Med does not provide medication to guests, as there are no healthcare professionals available on-site. Should you require medication, the reception team will be happy to assist by arranging a taxi to the nearest hospital for you.

Club Med Kiroro Grand Team and Service

What sets Club Med Kiroro Grand apart from other ski resorts in Japan is its the genuine hospitality from the team. For them, hospitality isn’t just a duty; it’s a way of life. From the moment you arrive, you’re enveloped in sincere warmth and impeccable service from the dedicated staff. They tirelessly strive to make your experience truly exceptional.

We had the pleasure of reconnecting with many Club Med GOs whom we met on our previous trips, as well as some from other Club Med resorts who are now at Club Med Kiroro Grand. Knowing these Club Med GOs allows us to expedite requests and get things done more efficiently.

I’m particularly proud of my longstanding friendship with Ms. Merlin Chelliah, the current General Manager (Chief de Village) of Club Med Kiroro Grand. Beyond her professional duties, she’s a cherished personal friend who’s always ready to assist any of my guests during their stay at her resort.
